Event Details

A self-described autodidact, Jonathan Olivares will discuss the process and thinking behind three of his office’s projects: A Taxonomy of Office Chairs published by Phaidon Press; Smith, a multi-purpose home-office cart designed for Danese Milano in 2007; and the exhibition "Useless: An Exploded View," curated and designed for the EXD design Biennial in Lisbon.

Jonathan Olivares' multi-disciplinary practice comprises industrial design, research, writing, and exhibition design. The office has designed furniture for Danese Milano and Knoll Inc. and exhibitions for Nouveau Musée National Monaco, CENTRO Diseño Cine Television in Mexico City, and the EXD design Biennial in Lisbon. Research projects have included a survey of the American furniture industry for Domus, an installation explaining some of the spatial effects of mobile devices for the 2010 St. Étienne Design Biennial, and a four-year investigation of office chairs which culminated in the book A Taxonomy of Office Chairs (Phaidon Press, 2011).

The Spring 2012 Design Criticism MFA Lecture Series is open to the public. You are warmly invited to attend our lectures, to see our new department and to meet with speakers, faculty members and students over a drink.

The MFA in Design Criticism at the School of Visual Arts is an innovative two-year program that trains students to research, analyze, and evaluate design and its social and environmental implications. Students study with some of the best design writers and thinkers of our time, including: “Studio 360″ host and author Kurt Andersen; MoMA’s design curator Paola Antonelli; former editor of I.D. Magazine Ralph Caplan; Metropolis contributing editor Karrie Jacobs; and architecture critic Justin Davidson.

The School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City is an established leader and innovator in the education of artists. From its inception in 1947, the faculty has been comprised of professionals working in the arts and art-related fields. SVA provides an environment that nurtures creativity, inventiveness and experimentation, enabling students to develop a strong sense of identity and a clear direction of purpose.
